Why and How You Must Own Your Content

As you are reading this, I want to thank you for reading Meraki. This newsletter stemmed from a much bigger reason of just starting one because every creator is doing it. The main reason was to have authority on my own content instead of letting another private platform host it.

I only decided to host my newsletter on my Substack but then I realized that I am putting all my eggs under one basket. With the chaos across Social Media companies and watching CEOs take decisions of shutting down platforms, it was a wake up call for me to own control over my own content.

1. Own a Blog

This is so crucial. Always remember that the internet might be a huge bubble and there is plenty of space to host music, written documents, videos, audios or any other content you are putting your heart and soul into. However, it will take a second or just a blip to erase everything if the company shuts down. Imagine, Medium shuts down and you lose all your blog posts and written experience along with it. Your blog is not just about building authority but is also a visual representation of your personal brand.

2. Promote your artwork on your Website

You have much more freedom and can control your own pricing. I have tried the digital artwork journey via Etsy and Society6. While I was very delighted to make my first sale on both platforms, the amount of work I had put in did not justify the profit I made. The platforms take a high cut for your own creations even if they are digital downloads. It is always better to have control over your own inventory and pricing for the art you make

3. Drive your audience to your Website

While websites such as Linktree & Beacons might be very handy to list all your social links and courses under one umbrella, it is considered to be a better idea when your own website gets visibility and clicks for hosting the same. Pointing all your social media platforms to your website is the best way to let your clients and audience know about your e-home.

4. Always backup your content

This one cannot be stressed enough but even if you are not using all of the content (which most of us don’t), you still better back it all up. And this means investing in the best piece of software or storage device. Remember you are building a legacy for years to come and sometimes old content is considered royal. Also, you can always look back and get inspired by your creative ideas

So for now, get started with locking up a domain name for yourself or your brand if you haven’t already!
